Santa Maria -- The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission presents Rec¢· la· ma¢·tion,
a mixed media exhibition of regional artists curated by Cheryl Weiss, Professor of Art, Allan Hancock College and Vice President of the Nipomo Arts Commission, facilitated by John Hood, Professor of Art, Allan Hancock College and Arts Commissioner from the 5th District, from November 23, 2009 to February 19, 2010 at the Betteravia Government Center, 511 E. Lakeside, Santa Maria.
The opening reception will be Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 4-6pm.
Rec¢· la· ma¢·tion showcases the work of regional artists who use mixed media and found objects to explore ideas about the act and process of transformation and revitalization. Artists featured in the exhibition are: Larry Delinger, Anthony Hicks, Juan Manuel Perez, Natasha Stanton and Patti Screen-Smith.
Cheryl Weiss said, “According to the dictionary, reclamation is the act or process of reformation, the restoration of use or recovery. As a theme, this seems especially timely to me. When artists use mixed media and found objects, their works transform what may be commonplace and discarded. What was lost, is regained. By revitalizing what appears useless and worn, these pieces elevate our perceptions. It is exciting, emotionally moving and thought-provoking when our imaginations are actively involved in the creative process as we view the work. What emerges reconnects us to our shared humanity, our spirit, a reverence for all life, and often our sense of humor and sense of wonder.” Among the artists participating are some for whom the Central Coast was once home. “I invited their participation, so they could return here through their art, to reclaim and reaffirm their connection to this community,” Weiss said.
This exhibition is a project of the County Arts in Public Places (CAPP) Committee of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission with generous funding support provided by the following: Esther Bates, Charles L. Bloom Foundation, Ginny Brush & Mari Bartoli, Teen Conlon, Joan Cyr, Joan Davidson, Phyllis De Picciotto, Jacqueline Dyson, 7 Day Nursery, Mary Heebner, Joanne Holderman, Betty and Bob Klausner, Elaine LeVasseur, Jon and Lillian Lovelace, The Palm Loft Gallery, Frances Puccinelli, Scott Rowland, Rick and Ro Sanders, William Prindle, C.
