Rec¢· la· ma¢·tion Cheryl Weiss, Curator

Santa Maria -- The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission presents Rec¢· la· ma¢·tion,

a mixed media exhibition of regional artists curated by Cheryl Weiss, Professor of Art, Allan Hancock College and Vice President of the Nipomo Arts Commission, facilitated by John Hood, Professor of Art, Allan Hancock College and Arts Commissioner from the 5th District, from November 23, 2009 to February 19, 2010 at the Betteravia Government Center, 511 E. Lakeside, Santa Maria.

The opening reception will be Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 4-6pm.

Rec¢· la· ma¢·tion showcases the work of regional artists who use mixed media and found objects to explore ideas about the act and process of transformation and revitalization. Artists featured in the exhibition are: Larry Delinger, Anthony Hicks, Juan Manuel Perez, Natasha Stanton and Patti Screen-Smith.

Cheryl Weiss said, “According to the dictionary, reclamation is the act or process of reformation, the restoration of use or recovery. As a theme, this seems especially timely to me. When artists use mixed media and found objects, their works transform what may be commonplace and discarded. What was lost, is regained. By revitalizing what appears useless and worn, these pieces elevate our perceptions. It is exciting, emotionally moving and thought-provoking when our imaginations are actively involved in the creative process as we view the work. What emerges reconnects us to our shared humanity, our spirit, a reverence for all life, and often our sense of humor and sense of wonder.” Among the artists participating are some for whom the Central Coast was once home. “I invited their participation, so they could return here through their art, to reclaim and reaffirm their connection to this community,” Weiss said.

This exhibition is a project of the County Arts in Public Places (CAPP) Committee of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission with generous funding support provided by the following: Esther Bates, Charles L. Bloom Foundation, Ginny Brush & Mari Bartoli, Teen Conlon, Joan Cyr, Joan Davidson, Phyllis De Picciotto, Jacqueline Dyson, 7 Day Nursery, Mary Heebner, Joanne Holderman, Betty and Bob Klausner, Elaine LeVasseur, Jon and Lillian Lovelace, The Palm Loft Gallery, Frances Puccinelli, Scott Rowland, Rick and Ro Sanders, William Prindle, C. I am "published". The painting, The Critics, I did 2 years ago. It belongs to Esther Bates. The color looks great. Thank you Christine, Lynn and Esther.

Had an early Thanksgiving...

at Faria Beach Colony in Ventura. We had a beautiful day, great food and the joy of being with family.... with all the babies there were 28....I am so lucky! We were all there except LE and Jon and Steph's son, Thatcher. Baby Eric is the newest member, Steve and Patty's 3 month old...so sweet....And big news....Bethany and Kevin are going to make Mark and Lori grandparents in May.
Madison almost warmed up to everyone...lots of air kisses on the way out.
I love the ocean. It is something that always brings back a flood of good memories. I think Maddie is on her way to her own flood....

That was a dry spell...I know...

I am still coming back from the whirlwind Queen of Arts. This was such a great event. They tried to give me the credit but I am not worthy....Really it just works. Everyone (36 artists and the Elverhoj Museum staff) does their job and it all happens. Esther at the Elverhoj is the real work force. This 3 day event is so amazing on so many levels. The first impression is WOW...everyone is so talented! You look around at everything and are amazed at the polished look of it all. We had several new artists and they really took it up another notch. I defy you to find an event with a more diverse array of great art. Another level is the feeling of community. One artist wished she could go camping with everyone. I know what she meant...it has a "good times" feel to it all. And one more level is the growth in the artists that I have seen over the years. That is very exciting for me.

I was gifted with the most amazing art from all the artists! I brought home my basket of goodies and I was blown away as I combed over each special piece. It was better than Xmas. Not only did I get things I had been eyeing, I got beautiful things I had not seen and were pick out by the artist for me....which makes the gift special in new way. Thank you everyone. I really don't know how to express my gratitude.

After the event Shelly, Carol, Ruth and I went out to the sushi place to unwind. This is such a sweet pic of Ruth and Carol....
